SURAT: A self-inflated lifesaving raft was recovered from the sea near Rajagari village of Hazira near the city on Wednesday. After preliminary examination, police claimed that no one was present on it and it was covered when police found it. Hazira is a hub of heavy industries.
Police were alerted by fishermen from the village after which they reached the spot and examined the raft that has come to the shore. Police opened the cover of the raft and no one was found inside. From the raft some lifesaving material was recovered.
It will be brought to marine police station for further investigation. Police will get it examined by a team of experts from different agencies to rule out any threat.
“It is a self-inflated lifesaving raft and it could have separated from some ship. The rope found with it is broken. It is being brought to a better place for detailed examination,” added S G Bhati, joint commissioner of police, Surat. Police are collecting details about movement of ships in the sea near Hazira to find out if the raft had separated it.
It created curiosity among locals as a number of villagers rushed to the spot to witness the raft. Police are questioning fishermen from the area.
