Murali Vijay scored his 10th and Cheteshwar Pujara his 14th century with Cheteshwar Pujara propelled India 107 runs ahead against Sri Lanka on Saturday.
India were 312 for two at close of play on the second day of the second Test.
Both batsmen amassed 209 runs during their second-wicket partnership after a sedate start from the first day’s position of 11 for one, in reply to Sri Lanka’s 205. This is tenth occasion involving the two batsmen in century partnership.
After Vijay departed, Pujara (121 not out) added 96 runs for the third-wicket with Virat Kohli who played some fine strokes to return unbeaten on 54.
Vijay, returning after a wrist injury layoff, and Pujara batted with caution against the seamers and then prospered against the spinners on pitch not friendly to bowlers. Vijay scored just 19 runs off 60 balls as seamers Lakmal, Gamage and Shanaka bowled decent lines in the pre lunch session.
Vijay (22) and Pujara (12) batted slowly in the first hour, adding just 32 runs. They accelerated the run rate before the lunch break as they batted freely against spinners Herath and Perera. Vijay returned for lunch at 56 while Pujara, 33, helped him to advance India to 97 for one.
Both batsmen returned rejuvenated after lunch. They duly obeyed the order to score briskly. In the session between lunch and tea they added 88 runs to advance India to 185 for one. Vijay reached his century off 187 balls of these he hit nine to boundary and one over it.
