India rout Sri Lanka by innings and 239 runs

Nagpur, November 27, 2017.

India defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 239 runs on Monday in the second cricket Test to take 1-0 lead in the three-match series in Nagpur.

This is India’s biggest ever victory margin. The record equals the same margin that India, led by Rahul Dravid, beat Bangladesh at Mirpur in 2007.

India routed the visitors for 166 runs in the second innings. Ravichandran Ashwin took four wickets for 63 runs to take his match tally to 8 for 130, and also reached the landmark of 300 Test wickets.

He reached the milestone in 54 Tests, beating Dennis Lillee’s record of 56 matches. Others in this list include Muttiah Muralitharan (58 Tests), Richard Hadlee, Malcolm Marshall and Dale Steyn (61 Tests each).

Skipper Dinesh Chandimal (61) resisted the Indian bowlers. The visitors’ tame surrender continues their miserable run this year. The team’s inability to fight and last five days in Tests calls for urgent intervention by Sri Lankan cricket board.
